Aung San Suu Kyi, the former State Counsellor of Myanmar, has been subject to numerous criminal charges and convictions following the February 1, 2021, military coup. Following her arrest, she faced at least 18 charges, including corruption, sedition, election fraud, breaching the Official Secrets Act, and violating COVID-19 and import-export laws. Specific corruption allegations include accepting $600,000 and gold bars as bribes, receiving $550,000 from a tycoon, and abusing her position to rent property and build a residence using charitable funds. The military government also alleged she caused state financial loss regarding the procurement of a helicopter. She consistently denied all allegations, which were widely condemned by the international community and human rights organizations as politically motivated "sham" trials. By December 2022, she was convicted on a series of charges resulting in a total sentence of 33 years, which was later reduced to 27 years. Beyond these criminal charges, she faced significant controversy during her tenure (2016–2021) for her inaction and defense of the military regarding the Rohingya genocide and for the prosecution of journalists.
