Shawn Kaui Hill, professionally known as Bu Laia, has been involved in several legal and political controversies during his career. In 1994, his gubernatorial candidacy was disqualified because he was two years under the state's minimum age requirement; he admitted to using his brother's driver's license to file the papers. In July 1998, he was arrested for allegedly damaging a sticker vending machine. In October 2004, Hill received a sentence of one year probation and 100 hours of community service for resisting arrest and harassment following an altercation at a Hilo store. That same month, he was acquitted of assault and terroristic threatening charges related to a dispute with Maui Humane Society officers. He has also been noted for an arrest involving skateboarding at the Honolulu International Airport.
