Claudia Sheinbaum has faced several high-profile controversies and allegations throughout her career: The 2017 collapse of the Colegio Enrique Rébsamen in Tlalpan during an earthquake killed 19 children and seven adults. Critics accused her administration of negligence regarding building permits, which she denied. In 2024, reports confirmed her family members appeared in the Panama Papers, specifically linked to offshore companies in the British Virgin Islands. Sheinbaum initially denied this, later acknowledging the accounts were inherited following her grandmother's death and denying any illicit activity. In 2006, she led a team investigating alleged electoral fraud following Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s narrow presidential loss, though the resulting challenge was denied by the tribunal.
