Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has faced numerous legal proceedings and controversies during and after her presidency (2007–2015). In the Vialidad case, she was convicted of fraudulent administration for granting public works contracts to a business associate, Lázaro Báez. In June 2025, the Supreme Court definitively upheld her six-year prison sentence and lifetime ban from holding public office. Courts have ordered the seizure of assets worth approximately US$500 million from her and other defendants to repay the state. She currently faces the notebooks case, involving allegations that she headed an illicit bribery ring to extract funds from businesses awarded government contracts. Prosecutors estimate this scheme involved up to US$160 million in bribes. She was acquitted in the AMIA bombing cover-up case (the Memorandum of Understanding with Iran) after courts initially ruled the agreement did not constitute a crime. Although this was later revoked and sent for further review, she has previously faced charges of treason and obstructing justice related to the incident. She has been acquitted of charges regarding the sale of dollar futures. Fernández de Kirchner maintains that these investigations are a politically motivated judicial persecution.
