Enrique Inzunza Cázarez is a Mexican Senator (Morena) and former Secretary General of Government of Sinaloa. His career is marked by several significant controversies and legal allegations. In April 2026, the United States Department of Justice indicted Inzunza in the District Court for the Southern District of New York. He is charged with narcotics importation conspiracy, conspiracy to possess machine guns and destructive devices, and possession of those weapons. The indictment alleges he collaborated with the Sinaloa Cartel faction known as Los Chapitos, provided protection for drug shipments, leaked confidential law enforcement information, and accepted bribes in exchange for political support. He faces a potential life sentence, with a 40-year mandatory minimum if convicted. Following these charges, he was arrested by the DEA in San Diego. Domestically, Inzunza has faced additional scrutiny. In 2017, a judge filed a sexual harassment complaint against him involving a graphic video; the case resulted in no sanctions. He has also faced allegations of nepotism regarding the employment of his daughter as an advisor to the Morena parliamentary group. Despite these controversies, he has maintained his Senate benefits and, until requesting a temporary leave in 2026, occupied influential legislative roles. Inzunza has rejected the U.S. accusations as false, attributing them to political motivations, and has stated his intent to represent himself during investigations by the Mexican Attorney General's Office.
