George Santos is a former U.S. representative who served in New York's 3rd district from January to December 2023. His career was marked by extensive fabrications regarding his education, employment, and personal biography. In May 2023, federal prosecutors indicted him on charges including wire fraud and theft of public funds. A superseding indictment later reached 23 counts. Allegations included stealing donor identities for credit card fraud, misusing campaign funds for personal luxuries like designer goods and OnlyFans, and fraudulently claiming unemployment benefits. A House Ethics Committee report corroborated findings of substantial unlawful financial activity. Santos was expelled from Congress on December 1, 2023. He pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft in August 2024. In April 2025, he was sentenced to 87 months in prison and ordered to pay approximately $374,000 in restitution and $200,000 in forfeiture. His sentence was later commuted by Donald Trump, who also canceled his unpaid fines. Santos also faced prior legal issues in Brazil related to felony check fraud.
