Jacob Zuma has faced numerous legal and ethical controversies throughout his career. In 2006, he was acquitted of rape charges. He is currently scheduled to stand trial in April 2025 regarding a 1999 arms deal; he faces charges of corruption, racketeering, fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering related to 783 payments allegedly received as bribes from businessman Schabir Shaik and Thales. These charges have been repeatedly dropped, reinstated, and challenged since 2005. In 2016, the Constitutional Court ruled Zuma failed to uphold the Constitution regarding the use of public funds for upgrades to his Nkandla homestead; he subsequently repaid the money. In 2021, the Constitutional Court convicted him of contempt of court for refusing to testify before the Zondo Commission, which investigated allegations of state capture involving the Gupta family. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison, served part of the term, and was later granted remission.
