Jair Bolsonaro, president of Brazil from 2019 to 2022, is currently serving a 27-year and 3-month prison sentence for his role in a plot to overturn the 2022 election results. In September 2025, the Supreme Federal Court convicted him of armed criminal conspiracy, attempted abolition of the democratic rule of law, attempted coup d'état, violent destruction of public property, and damage to protected national heritage. The court found he led a conspiracy that included plans to assassinate his successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. He is currently under house arrest due to health issues granted in March 2026, following his initial incarceration. Prior legal and ethical controversies include: In June 2023, the Superior Electoral Court declared Bolsonaro ineligible for office until 2030 for abuse of political and economic power and misuse of government communication channels to delegitimize the electoral system. In March 2024, the court fined him R$ 425,640 for election-related conduct violations. He was indicted by Federal Police for misappropriation of public assets, criminal association, and money laundering related to the sale of state-gifted jewelry from Saudi Arabia, including a $68,000 Rolex watch. He faced charges of illicit enrichment involving a former employee, Walderice Santos da Conceição, who allegedly received a government salary while performing personal services as a maid. Additionally, his administration faced investigations regarding the redirection of federal education funding to political associates, which led to the resignation of his Education Minister, Milton Ribeiro.
