Janelle Bynum is the U.S. Representative for Oregon’s 5th Congressional District and a former member of the Oregon House of Representatives. Regarding allegations of misconduct, there have been no formal findings of corruption, fraud, bribery, or convictions. In 2024, an ethics complaint was filed with the Oregon Legislative Equity Office by a staffer for Bynum's primary opponent, alleging Bynum failed to report sexual harassment and assault claims against a campaign field director in 2022. Bynum stated she reported the information to the staffer's employer, FuturePAC. The Legislative Equity Office confirmed Bynum was not under investigation, and no criminal charges have been filed against her. Bynum has faced political criticism for casting a sole vote against a 2019 bill that would have extended the statute of limitations for rape survivors to seven years, arguing at the time that the duration was too long; she subsequently voted for the measure after it was amended to five years. She was also among lawmakers who lobbied for the early release of inmates during the COVID-19 pandemic to address prison overcrowding.
