John Cornyn has faced no criminal convictions, indictments, or findings of ethics violations during his career. He has been the subject of two specific past controversies: In the early 1990s, while serving on the Texas Supreme Court and as a presiding judge for the 4th Administrative Judicial District, Cornyn faced a conflict-of-interest lawsuit regarding his dual roles. This led to a perjury investigation by the Travis County District Attorney concerning conflicting residency affidavits. The District Attorney declined to file criminal charges in November 1992 due to insufficient evidence. Separately, Cornyn faced criticism for "double dipping" by collecting state pensions while serving as a U.S. Senator. In 2012, he amended his financial disclosures from 2006 to 2010 to include previously omitted state pension payments.
