Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the 35th and 39th president of Brazil, has faced various legal proceedings and political controversies throughout his career. In 2005, his administration was accused of the Mensalão scandal, involving allegations that the Workers' Party made monthly payments to congressional deputies to secure legislative support. Regarding Operation Car Wash, Lula was convicted in 2017 for passive corruption and money laundering related to a triplex apartment in Guarujá. He was sentenced to nine years and six months, later increased to 12 years and one month, and finally reduced to eight years and ten months by the Superior Court of Justice. He was imprisoned from April 2018 until November 2019. In 2021, the Supreme Federal Court overturned these convictions, ruling that the original court lacked jurisdiction, and the case was subsequently dismissed. Additionally, he faced charges for obstruction of justice and other corruption-related allegations involving Petrobras, which were also impacted by these jurisdictional rulings.
