Michael J. Madigan, former Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, served from 1983 to 2021. In 2022, he was indicted on twenty-three federal counts of racketeering, bribery, wire fraud, and Travel Act violations. Prosecutors alleged he led a criminal enterprise that funneled over $3 million to political allies in exchange for official legislative actions benefiting Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) and leveraged his office to solicit business for his private law firm. On February 12, 2025, a jury convicted Madigan on ten counts: conspiracy, bribery, wire fraud, and Travel Act violations. He was acquitted on seven counts, including charges related to the Union West development, and the jury deadlocked on six counts, including racketeering. In June 2025, he was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison and fined $2.5 million. On April 27, 2026, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit affirmed his convictions. Madigan began serving his sentence in October 2025.
