Michael Misick, the first Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands, served from 2006 until his resignation in 2009 amid widespread corruption allegations. Following an investigation that revealed systematic financial misconduct and the improper sale of Crown land, a 2008 Commission of Enquiry recommended criminal investigation. In December 2012, Misick was arrested in Brazil after fleeing the territory and was later extradited. He faced charges including bribery, money laundering, and conspiracy to defraud the government. On February 4, 2026, he was convicted of three counts of bribery. On May 29, 2026, he was sentenced to four years and 26 days in prison. A 2008 sexual assault allegation against Misick was not substantiated, and the claim failed. Additionally, in 2011, a court ordered a worldwide freeze of his assets.
