Nadine Menendez, the wife of former U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, was indicted on September 21, 2023, by a federal grand jury in the Southern District of New York. She was charged with conspiracy to commit bribery, honest services fraud, and extortion, alongside her husband and three businessmen. The charges stemmed from a scheme to trade the senator’s political influence for hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, gold bars, and a luxury vehicle between 2018 and 2022.
Following a separate trial in March 2025 due to a medical condition, a jury convicted her on all counts. In 2026, she was sentenced to 54 months in prison, three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $922,188.10 in forfeiture. U.S. District Judge Sidney Stein denied her subsequent motions for acquittal or a new trial. She was previously involved in a 2018 fatal vehicle accident but faced no charges for that incident.
