Nicolas Sarkozy, President of France from 2007 to 2012, has faced multiple legal proceedings related to corruption, influence peddling, and campaign finance violations. In the Bismuth case, Sarkozy was convicted of corruption and influence peddling for attempting to secure favors from a judge in 2014. His final conviction, upheld in December 2024, resulted in a three-year sentence, with one year served under electronic monitoring. In the Bygmalion affair, Sarkozy was convicted of illegal campaign financing for his 2012 re-election bid. The court found he allowed a system of false invoices to exceed the legal spending cap of 22.5 million euros by roughly 20 million euros. His conviction became final in November 2025, with a sentence of one year imprisonment, including six months that could be adapted. In the Libya case, a Paris court convicted Sarkozy in September 2025 of criminal conspiracy related to illegal campaign financing for his 2007 election using funds from Muammar Gaddafi’s regime. He received a five-year prison sentence and a five-year ban from public office. He was acquitted of charges regarding passive corruption, embezzlement, and illegal campaign financing. He has appealed this conviction. Sarkozy has consistently denied all wrongdoing across these cases. Legal repercussions have included incarceration at La Santé prison, the use of electronic monitoring, and the loss of his Legion of Honour.
