Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, is currently under investigation following a two-year probe initiated in April 2024 by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado. As of April 2026, she has been formally charged with influence peddling, corruption in business dealings, embezzlement of public funds, and misappropriation. The case involves allegations that she leveraged her position to secure private professional gains, including sponsorship for a university master's course and favorable treatment for business associates in public tenders. Gómez, along with co-defendants Cristina Álvarez and businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés, awaits a trial date. A separate strand of inquiry regarding potential fraud against European Union financial interests was opened in June 2026. Gómez has consistently denied all wrongdoing, describing the allegations as politically motivated, a position supported by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which has repeatedly sought to have the case dismissed due to a lack of evidence. In a separate development, the charge of professional misconduct was previously dropped by the court.
