Robert Menendez, a former U.S. Senator from New Jersey, faced two major federal corruption indictments during his career. In 2015, he was indicted for bribery and conspiracy related to gifts from Dr. Salomon Melgen; that case resulted in a 2017 mistrial due to a hung jury, and charges were dropped in 2018. The U.S. Senate Select Committee on Ethics subsequently admonished him for failing to disclose gifts and improperly advancing Melgen's interests.
