Rubén Rocha Moya, the former Governor of Sinaloa (2021–2026), faces significant criminal allegations regarding his ties to organized crime. In April 2026, he was indicted in the United States by the Department of Justice on charges of drug trafficking and weapons offenses. Prosecutors allege he conspired with the Los Chapitos faction of the Sinaloa Cartel to import narcotics into the U.S. in exchange for bribes and political support. Rocha Moya has categorically denied these accusations. In August 2024, Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada alleged that Rocha Moya was intended to be at a meeting involving him and the murdered politician Héctor Melesio Cuén Ojeda, a claim the governor also denied. Rocha Moya stepped down from his position on May 2, 2026. Mexico’s government has stated the U.S. extradition request lacked sufficient evidence.
