Samuel Tweah Jr., the former Minister of Finance and Development Planning of Liberia, has been the subject of multiple corruption allegations and investigations. In May 2026, he was acquitted by a jury at Criminal Court C of all charges in a high-profile economic sabotage case involving the alleged diversion of over L$1 billion and US$500,000 in state funds. Prosecutors had alleged these funds were illegally transferred through the Financial Intelligence Agency under the guise of national security, but the jury ruled that the state failed to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Additionally, in December 2024, the United States government sanctioned Tweah for allegedly abusing his public position through bribery. Following his acquittal in May 2026, Tweah was summoned by the Liberian Asset Recovery and Property Retrieval Task Force regarding a new investigation into the alleged misuse of US$20.5 million in rice subsidy payments between 2021 and 2022. Tweah has consistently denied all allegations, labeling them politically motivated witch-hunts.
