Stephen Stat Smith, a former member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, served from 2007 to 2013. In December 2012, Smith agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor counts of deprivation of rights under color of law. The charges stemmed from a voter fraud scheme in 2009 and 2010 where Smith submitted fraudulent absentee ballot applications and cast invalid ballots for voters who were either ineligible or unaware. Smith resigned from office effective January 1, 2013. In April 2013, he was sentenced to four months in federal prison and ordered to pay a $20,000 fine.
