Steve Bannon, a former media executive and chief strategist for President Donald Trump, has been involved in two primary legal proceedings:
In 2020, Bannon was federally indicted for conspiracy to commit mail fraud and money laundering regarding the We Build the Wall fundraising campaign, which raised over $25 million. He received a presidential pardon from Donald Trump on January 19, 2021.
In 2022, New York state charged him with money laundering, conspiracy, and fraud related to the same scheme. He pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree scheme to defraud in February 2025 and received three years of conditional discharge.
In 2021, Bannon was indicted for contempt of Congress for defying a House Select Committee subpoena. He was convicted in July 2022, sentenced to four months in prison, and served that time in 2024. Following Donald Trump's return to office, the Department of Justice moved to dismiss these charges, and in April 2026, the Supreme Court vacated the judgment and remanded the case for reconsideration of that dismissal.
