Yoon Suk Yeol served as the 13th president of South Korea from 2022 until his removal from office in April 2025. Following his failed declaration of martial law in December 2024, he was impeached, arrested, and convicted of multiple crimes. Yoon is currently serving a life sentence, handed down in February 2026 for leading an insurrection. Additionally, in June 2026, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for benefiting the enemy and abuse of power after ordering drone infiltrations into North Korea to create a pretext for martial law. He also holds a seven-year sentence, upheld on appeal in April 2026, for obstruction of official duties and abuse of authority regarding the martial law declaration. Throughout his presidency, Yoon and his wife, Kim Keon Hee, faced allegations of corruption, influence peddling, and bribery, including the acceptance of luxury gifts. Kim Keon Hee was indicted in August 2025 and sentenced to 20 months in prison for bribery in January 2026. Yoon also faced investigations regarding the death of a marine in 2023.
