Alberto Fujimori (1938–2024) served as president of Peru from 1990 to 2000. His administration was marked by authoritarianism, a 1992 self-coup dissolving Congress and the courts, and systematic corruption involving intelligence chief Vladimiro Montesinos.
Facing major scandals in 2000, Fujimori fled to Japan and resigned via fax. He was later arrested in Chile in 2005 and extradited to Peru in 2007. Convictions included:
25 years for human rights violations, including the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta massacres and kidnappings.
7.5 years for embezzlement ($15 million transfer to Montesinos).
6 years for abuse of power (illegal search and seizure).
6 years for bribery and corruption.
Sentences were served concurrently. He received a humanitarian pardon in 2017, which was contested and later reinstated, leading to his release in 2023.
